Cramped spaces and overcrowded desks are a headache for business owners. In response, Dell announced the Vostro All in One, Dells first all-in-one desktop computer designed exclusively for small businesses.

Small businesses around the world are constantly looking to do more with less, and IDC predicts that by 2013 small form factor, all-in-one and ultra-small form factor desktops will make up nearly 38 percent of the overall desktop market, said Richard Shim, research manager for IDC's Personal Computing program. Solutions that help organizations migrate to space-saving desktops are well positioned to benefit from this trend.

The Vostro All in Ones clutter-free design minimizes the amount of space the computer takes up on the desk to provide business buyers with a powerful, stylish and affordable desktop computer. What’s more, the computers full desktop processing power is backed with Dells worry-free small business support.

When combined with optional integrated Wi-Fi and a wireless mouse and keyboard, the result is a wire-free desk. The new Vostro also offers Intel Core 2 Duo processors and an integrated webcam that enables businesses to enjoy remote collaboration.

Small businesses are waking up to the fact that saving space is a critical requirement for their desktops and the Vostro All In One is the first-of-its-kind solution for small businesses wanting a cleaner, more productive workspace at an amazing value, said Sam Burd, global vice president, Dell Small and Medium Business. Dell Needs Check on Service Support

Dell the number two PC brand in the Indian market has been doing commendably well, buyers are happy with range, and love to pick up the colourful PCs. But as the numbers of buyers are increasing, so is a sense of dissatisfaction amongst them especially when it comes to service. It might be strong in its product push in the market, but Dell is showing a unconcerned attitude when it comes to service issues.

While Dell does have its service set up for the Indian consumers with toll-free numbers, online support, and engineers, but results are not very encouraging. The biggest complaint that consumers are making about Dell is that the company is not very proactive in promoting its service support network. The awareness levels amongst consumers is low, especially in B&C class locations. In fact this is also impacting the purchase decisions amongst consumers.

Case in point are the queries below that we at onlinedellsupport.blogspot.com got post a story on Dell's Service Network.

* I bought a laptop through Dell site (From US) 2.5 years ago, I saw its battery down (9-cell battery) around 6-7 months ago. Any dealers/service centers in Hyderabad where I can get the laptop repaired, wrote Sudhir Bhadauria, Dell Consumer, Hyderabad.

* I want to know about Dell service center nearest from haldwani or Haldwani (Uttrakhand), wrote Gangesh Sharma, Ganesh Polytex Ltd, Rudrapur, Uttranchal.

* I am interested in buying a Dell inspiron laptop but my apprehensions about the support of Dell in Orissa is holding me back. It would be of great help if you could please mail me at the earliest about the service centres of dell in bhubaneswar, orissa or nearby, wrote Swavab Sourav Moharana, Bhubaneswar, Orissa.

And its not just consumers from tier two markets, but also tier one cities. Surprisingly we heard from Renu Menon, of MindTree , Bangalore (The place where Dell is HQed). She asked, Can you please send me the address and phone number of Dell service centers in Banashankari and Janyanagar area in Bangalore. I am looking for a service center for Dell Inspiron laptop.

This proves that India's number two PC brand will have to really improve its awareness campaign for its service support set up. in fact it should already have been done seeing that Dell has now increased its channel network. Though the company offers doorstep service on call, but very few are aware. Surprisingly even the channel partners are low on awareness about this. We actually tried to get comments on this issue from the company but did not get any response. In this case then Dell will actually have to hitch up its pants and get moving with some hardcore awareness campaigns, especially in tier two and three cities, which are the sunshine markets for all IT brands in the country.

What initiatives should Dell adopt to create awareness about its service support?

Dell Announces Strong Stance Against Exporting E-Waste

Dell becomes among major computer manufacturer to ban the export of non-working electronics to developing countries as part of its global policy on responsible electronics disposal.

Dells electronics disposition policy now exceeds the requirements of the Basel Convention, which bans the export of certain electronic waste based on its material or chemical composition. By expanding its definition of electronic waste to include all non-working parts or devices, irrespective of material composition, Dell aims to help prevent the unauthorized dumping of electronic waste in developing countries by requiring that equipment be tested and certified as working prior to export.

Mahesh Bhalla, general manager (consumer business India), Dell: As one of the worlds leading providers of technology, we recognize our responsibility towards environmental issues concerning responsible product retirement and support re-cycling regulation or legislative proposals that are consistent and in line with our producer responsibility policy. We have world class partners to manage a safe, friendly recycling process and who understand that reusing computers by extending their life and performance is the way to go. To ensure that efficient and convenient product recovery options are available directly to consumers, Dell provides free recycling for any Dell branded product at anytime and free recycling for other branded products with the purchase of new Dell equipment."

These additions to the companies disposition policy reflect Dells long-standing commitment to responsibly manage sensitive electronic waste through final disposition.

In it, Dell defines electronic waste as non-working parts or devices, irrespective of material composition. It does not include:
Materials deemed non-hazardous by the Basel Convention;
Working equipment and parts that are not intended for disposal or recycling, but for donation, reuse or resale;
Components being returned under warranty to the original equipment manufacturer; or
Materials to be used in manufacturing without further processing or preparation.

The policy also states:

All exports and imports of electronic waste handled by Dell and its authorized environmental partners will comply with existing international waste trade agreements and legal requirements:
Dell does not permit electronic waste to be exported from developed (members countries in the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development [OECD] or the European Union [EU]) to developing (non-OECD/EU) countries, either directly or through intermediaries:
No prison or child labor will be used in the disposal of electronic waste; and
Every reasonable effort will be made to control all electronic wastes and prevent it from entering landfills or incinerators.

The policy also reinforces that electronic waste processed by Dells disposition chain is tracked and documented throughout the entire chain of custody until final disposition, and that Dell will audit its recycling, refurbishment and processing vendors at least annually to ensure they conform to Dells electronics disposition policy and environmental partner performance standards.

A Barbara Kyle, National Coordinator, Electronics Take Back Coalition: Too many companies are still exporting used, non-working electronic equipment to developing countries, supposedly for repairs. We applaud Dell for drawing a clear line by saying they will not export non-working electronics to developing countries not for recycling, and not for repairs. Dells policy on e-waste export is now the strongest in the industry and demonstrates Dells leadership as a global environmental citizen.
